Homeopathy Remedies for Asthma

Asthma causes swelling in the bronchioles of the lungs and mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes. Due to this inflammation, the air passages get narrowed, often to a point where the asthmatic person finds it difficult to breathe. Breathing specific allergens is usually the most common cause of asthma attacks. However, other factors such as bacterial infection (especially of the nose, throat and sinuses), sudden climatic changes, stress and emotional disturbances can also trigger asthma attacks. Occupational asthma is another form of the disease which can be caused by exposure to paint, dye, hair, latex, detergent and some specific chemicals.

Approach of Homeopathy Treatment for Asthma
Unlike traditional medicines that offer symptomatic relief from asthma, homeopathy goes deeper to treat the root cause of this disease. Typically, a homeopath, while treating an asthma patient, records his/her symptoms, family history, medical history, psychological and physical characteristics. These are used to find the precipitating factors, exact triggers of the disease, hereditary tendency, etc. before prescribing the medicines.

Significant Homeopathic Remedies for Asthma

There are several homeopathic medicines that can be used to treat asthma. Depending on the patient’s history, symptoms and other factors, the selection of such medicines can vary from one patient to another. Though it’s not possible to list all homeopathic medicines for asthma here, we will talk about some significant and common ones that can offer relief and help treat the condition:

  • Blatta orientalis: It is derived from a species of large Oriental cockroaches that live in damp areas and are active at night. Asthma patients with conditions that worsen in damp, moldy environments, or those allergic/sensitive to mildew, molds, etc. can benefit from this homeopathic medicine. Blatta orientalis is a potent medicine for treating asthma in obese people.
  • Lobelia: This is used to treat asthmatic breathing concurrent with stress, vomiting and nausea. Patients suffering from this condition often feel that they aren’t getting enough air to breathe properly. This realization causes panic, which can make the person work unnecessarily hard to breathe. As a result, the lungs can become “over-inflated”. Patients affected by this type of asthma experience shortness of breath that’s quite out of proportion to the wheezing and actual narrowing of the airways. Lobelia can help relieve this sensation of constriction and ease breathing. Women suffering from asthma attacks during labor can also benefit from this homeopathic medicine.
  • Arsenic Alb: For asthma in both the acute and chronic state, this homeopathic remedy can help. It is usually prescribed in cases where the attacks are frequent during night (especially after midnight), and are accompanied by extreme restlessness and fear of being suffocated on lying down.
  • Nux Vomica and Carbo Veg: At times, asthma attacks may occur after a heavy meal, often accompanied by symptoms such as a feeling of fullness and heaviness in the stomach. When gastric disturbances cause breathing difficulties and belching or passing of wind offer relief, Nux Vomica can be particularly helpful. However, in case of elders suffering from asthma with abdominal irritation and flatulence, Carbo Veg offers speedy relief.
  • Ipeca: This is prescribed for asthma patients with constant cough accompanied by vomiting or gagging. Ipecac is generally used as an expectorant in the treatment of croup, bronchitis, or dry, spasmodic cough, as it stimulates bronchial secretions to make coughing easier.

There are many other homeopathic medicines for asthma but you should always consult a homeopathic doctor before using any of them. All these medicines can offer a lasting cure for asthma without impairing immune functions or causing serious side effects and health problems, like some of its allopathic counterparts.
